Wilderness by Jane Butcher

What does this word mean to you? The desert and mountains of the Middle East, the rolling plains of America with tumbleweed blowing across the landscape, or the frozen tundra and steppes of Russia, white, cold and unforgiving?

Any or all of these images can represent that feeling of being lost, abandoned, isolated, fearful, sad and hopeless.

As Christians, most or all of us will at some time have a wilderness experience. A time when we lose sight of God, when we lose that precious awareness of His presence. We can fool the world that everything is good by going through the motions, we can even fool ourselves for a period. But…there comes a point in our experience when we can no longer pretend, we are confronted by our personal absence from His presence.

It is easy to feel overwhelmed, guilty, hopeless and exhausted, any, or all of the above, and yet our isolation is an illusion, a deceit. Our way back into the presence is just one tiny step of faith away.

The prodigal son certainly knew what life in the wilderness felt like. As is so often the case, it was only when he hit absolute rock bottom that he found the courage to take that first tiny step of faith. The part of the story which speaks to me, even resonates with me, is the response of his father. He didn't stand at the end of the road, stern, challenging, he didn't stare reprovingly, waiting for his wayward son to crawl back. He ran, wildly and exuberantly to meet his son, flinging his arms around him and weeping tears of utter joy at the return of his son. The Bible tells us that he had been standing watching, waiting for his son for days. WOW!

When we find ourselves in the wilderness and come to that point where we are finally willing to take that first small step of reconciliation our God, our Heavenly Father doesn't stand aloof. He runs to meet us, He weeps tears of joy as He embraces us and celebrates our return.

Wilderness experiences are painful but our rescue is always only one small step away; a simple prayer and a heartfelt desire to take shelter in the arms of our loving Heavenly Father once more.

Our wilderness experiences can be a catalyst, leading to renewed faith, strength, hope, purpose and anticipation. As I shared with our Bible Journaling family, I have had my time in the wilderness over the last few months, finally I've taken that first small, tentative step back into the Son light. I have been so blessed by the encouragement of so many of you and I am already feeling the stirrings of my old excitement spending time in the Word, in prayer and in worship. I'm looking forward to journaling the story of the prodigal son but I won't be focusing on the carousing, wild living, pigs! I’ll be focusing on the Father, Abba/Daddy, running to welcome his son home.

Share with Joy! by Tracy Southam

Comparison Is the Thief of Joy - Theodore Roosevelt
I have always enjoyed arts and crafts, excited by the new and keen to keep adding to my craft skills and abilities. As part of my journey I have been fortunate to meet some wonderful people who share their skills. I have also used my own gifts to teach and inspire others.

At no point do I profess to be an expert in any of the crafts I enjoy and have no desire to use them to sell myself as such. I do what I do for relaxation, for enjoyment and usually to bless others with what I make.

As part of my craft journey I love to get inspiration from Pinterest, Facebook, craft pages, Blogs and other groups and love the creative buzz that occurs.

It takes courage to share what you make and and create and the side that frustrates me with these creative spaces is the people who are frightened to share what they make as they feel it does not compare to others abilities.

If God had made us all the same there would not be the wonder in the world he created and trust me most of the "expert" crafters don't always have successes with what they make and had to start somewhere.

"God made you exactly who he wants you to be. Seek him with all of your heart and become the best you" 1 Thessalonians

I felt driven to write this blog post after doing the following journal page called 'I Quit' which was an Illustrated Faith printable (www.illustratedfaith.com). This was inspired by Matthew 11:28 ESV:
"Come to me all who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest."

I also created the following page from 1 Peter 5v7 "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you"

My wish for you all, friends, is to be proud of the you God created and to share the work you create for him with Joy (if you want to of course)! There may be people who don't like it but you are doing it for your time with God and for the occasional person who doesn't like it there will be another 2 who are inspired to do something new so........

Step by Step to making a Joy Shaker Pocket by Sarah Anderson

I adore glitter, and shinies, and fell in love with the idea of joy shaker pockets after seeing them on Celeste's Instagram @precious.to.me.  These little packets of sparkle fill your bible and/or planner with happiness!

I've put the first joy shaker pocket I made with this verse, which I've written as a prayer, in Romans, and used glittery tape to attach it to the top of my bible page.  So how do you make them??

The first thing you'll need is a cellophane packet.  I used this packet from some adhesive gems I purchased but you could use one from a greetings card, stamp set or a cellophane CD cover.

Cut a piece of coloured card to fit inside the packet.  I used card I'd painted, sprayed, stencilled and stamped on both side.  You could also use double sided scrapbook paper.

I stamped the word 'joy' on the front in black ...

..and repeatedly in aquamarine on the other side.  By stamping until the stamp runs out of ink (rather than inking the stamp each time you stamp) you get added texture as the word lightens.

Slide the stamped card into the pocket ...

... and collect together a selection of 'shinies'.  I found the glitter in Poundland, tiny star confetti in Tesco (other supermarkets are available!) and star sequins in Rymans.  In my first shaker pocket I used sequins from Hobbycraft.

Fill your pocket with a selection of glitter and sequins ...

... and seal with glittery tape.  I found this in Tesco (other supermarkets are available!) in the gift wrap section.

I added this shaker pocket into Nehemiah.  I journaled this page last week and whilst I was adding the shaker pocket decided it needed some sparkle so added some Stickles.  This is a glue containing ultra fine glitter and is one of my favourites.  You'll find it in Hobbycraft.

I hope this has inspired you to fill your bible with glitter and shine, and hunt out those verses about joy.  And I pray that our God of hope will fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
